The Period Pocket Book

Project Type

Thesis, Branding, Print, Campaign, Website

My Thesis Statement: The stigma surrounding menstruation creates a gap between current period education resources and their effectiveness, as existing educational materials are often too progressive pushing against the stigma. The 'Period Pocket Book' can bridge this gap by offering a discreet, inclusive, and comprehensive resource that addresses multiple aspects of period education, ultimately serving as a stepping stone toward more effective and accessible learning.

The Target Audience for the 'Period Pocket Book' are young adolescents aged 9 to 14 - those who are experiencing or approaching menstruation. They are the one's going to use the educational resource. The target market is key influencers in young adolescents lives' - like parents, educators, and community organizations. They are the one's that can provide accessibility to the educational resource for young adolescents.

The 'Period Pocket Book' is a 14 page, foldable zine-style booklet that covers the basics of menstruation - from anatomy and hygiene to FAQ. It's meant to be discreet, easy to distribute, and approachable in tone and format. The back cover contains the name, non-for-profit organization logo, and a QR code for additional resources, along with the last page including web links and a space for adults or educators to add their own trusted recommendations. The exterior design is minimal to provide privacy and a level of discreetness.

"Education Health" is a fake non-for-profit organization that focuses on the health of the education that younger generations are receiving, they're branding is meant to be simplistic in design to be recognizable yet not stand out too much, with a feminine in nature but not overpowering "periods" theme colour palette.

Instructions on how to print and fold the booklet are also included. This is for parents, teachers, and communities to be able to print and assemble the booklet themselves for easy accessibility. As well as a black and white version of the zine for printing on printers with no colour.

To expand its impact, I've also designed a poster for bathrooms, prompting kids to ask trusted adults about the book, or visit the no-for-profit website with a 'QR code' for more information. It will be put in bathroom's as a way to address the topic directly but not as publicly, keeping a certain level of discreetness.

The 'QR codes' on the zine and bathroom poster lead to an online interactive website. The landing page is welcoming, and encourages visitors to search for information they need, or to browse through a few predetermined topics. The topics reflect some of the key pages in the period pocket book, but would expand upon each topic in more detail. At the bottom of the homepage, if users still aren't able to find the information they are looking for, there is a call-to-action for the websites questions page. The questions page is meant for users to ask anonymous questions in an online environment that can be answered by staff, volunteers or the website community.

The 'Period Pocket Book' is an educational resource that represents a crucial first step toward effective menstrual education, though it is not the final solution to breaking the global stigma surrounding menstruation. It opens the door to better understanding by offering an accessible, well-designed, and stigma-conscious educational resource.
